Choosing the Correct Connector Method

Selecting the best method of connectorizing your installation is directly dependent upon your application. There are three popular methods of connectorizing fiber optic cable:

  1. Installing connectors after cable is pulled
  2. Fusing pigtails and
  3. Ordering factory pre-installed connectors.

Each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages for cost, performance and time of installing.

The first method of connectorizing cable is to install connectors after cable is pulled. One advantage of this commonly used technique is that it simplifies the task of pulling the cable. The installer must be capable of installing connectors at the site, which requires experience of the installer to connectorize and use the proper equipment. When such APC and UPC special factory terminations are required, the site installed connection approach cannot be used.

The second method of connectorizing fiber optic cable is to fusion splice or mechanically splice pigtails to the ends of the installed fiber. This technique works well for required APC and UPC connections. When fusing or mechanically splicing pigtails, the installer must possess splicing skills versus connectorization skills. Mechanical splices are individually expensive, but do not require the capital purchase of a fusion splicer.

The third method would be to factory order connectors installed on the cable, protected by a pulling eye. Staggering the connector locations reduces the total diameter of the cable assemblies that would otherwise be stacked on top of each other. Pre-installed connectors require more liberal pulling areas than bare cable. If a connector is damaged during the pull, a capability of replacing this connector would be necessary. Many contractors find this method quick and simple.

All of the methods mentioned are proper and used daily in the field. Which one you choose will depend on your budget, contracting skills, and the deadline to complete the job. Proper planning before the job begins will allow you to accomplish your project goals.
